JIU-JITSU BATTLE III PRESENTED BY SHOYOROLL WRAP-UP

The highly touted Jiu-Jitsu Battle III competitors enthralled the crowd at Graffiti House on Saturday June 8th.

Post-Pan Americans and Worlds brings relief to many that diligently prepared and fought through these tournaments.  By now, most have come to terms with their results and have time to prepare for what’s to come.  About a week.

To celebrate these athletes, Jiu-Jitsu Battle III presented by Shoyoroll, showcased several blue, purple, and brown belts from around the world.  Competing for stakes, bragging rights, and titles of legitimacy, the competitors gave the fans much to talk about.  Hosted again at Graffiti House LA, they prepared a backdrop perfect for the mat space of two samurai warriors.  One stated, “It’s like Street Fighter, they get to compete with a background.  I wonder where the next one is going to be?”

Budo Videos provided their filming services but due to logistical matters, could not stream the event live.  Budo Videos and WVSN were disappointed but are hopeful to provide a viewing outlet for events to come.  Matches will be provided on their website.

BenjiSilva

Blue Belt: SILVA denies revenge
After defeating NICK BORBON at the Dethrone qualifier, BENJI SILVA continued his success at the main event.  Both competitors made their ways to the final round and both looked ready for the rematch.  After minutes of what seemed an even match, SILVA swiftly caught BORBON in a triangle coach and gave a thumbs up to his coach.  After doing so, he managed to secure the armbar to win the title.

Winner: Benji Silva
Submission: Triangle Armbar

EdwinNajmi

Purple Belt (lightweight): No rush for Najmi as he dominates
EDWIN NAJMI showed everyone why he’s top of the class in the purple belt division.  NAJMI maintained his composure in the final round against SILVIO DURAN.  Many anticipated a lopsided victory but DURAN proved a worthy opponent.  Spending much of the match in 50/50 guard, the crowd became restless and hissed for a reset.  The referee was opposed and let the match continue.  And smartly so.  NAJMI managed to reposition himself and catch DURAN in a bow and arrow choke as the crowd roared.

Winner: Edwin Najmi
Submission: Bow and Arrow Choke

WellingtonLuis

Purple Belt (heavyweight): Luis crowned heavy weight champion
WELLINGTON LUIS and HUNTER EWALD highlighted the heavy weight final.  Despite being big in stature, these two competitors moved as quick as lightweights.  Arguably one of the most technical rounds of the day, LUIS and EWALD both displayed eye-popping maneuvers and agility.  Before the crowd could catch their breath, LUIS managed to secure a loop choke for the win.

Winner: Wellington Luis
Submission: Loop Choke

PauloMiyao

Brown Belt: P. MIYAO displays delight in win
With the brown belt division topping off the day, the preliminary rounds could hardly be defined as preliminary.  All seven matches (finals included) were superfights in themselves and pleased the crowd immensely.  All eyes were on the MIYAO Brothers as they took the mat five of the seven rounds of the division.

Everyone looked forward to the first round match between PAULO MIYAO and JORDAN SCHULTZ but the crowd got a little more than expected.  P. MIYAO pulled SCHULTZ’S gi pants down while progressing towards a back take.  P. MIYAO was then able to secure the back and locked in a lapel choke for the win.

Joao VS Garry

JOAO MIYAO and GARY TONON had the fight of the day with J. MIYAO winning in overtime.  Soon thereafter, FELIPE SILVA defeated J. MIYAO with a devastating kneebar setting the stage for the final round.

FelipeVSJoao

SILVA took a similar approach fighting P. MIYAO as he did his brother in the final round.  SILVA pursued P. MIYAO’S berimbolo attempts with kneebar attempts but was unsuccessful.  P. MIYAO was able to eventually catch SILVA in a lapel choke.  As he got up, P. MIYAO ripped open his gi top and let off a battle cry.
